The Substitute was a film that came out in 1996 that brought a Caucasian undercover cop/teacher into a rough Miami inner city school to whip the kids into shape but also gain insight into gang violence in the school. There was rampant drug use in this school adaptation and violence. Is this the real portrayal of some inner city schools in the United States? Is this movie something we could teach our students about drug and violence in schools? Are our students connected in some of the gang life style shown in this film? Makes you wonder where students get ideas of committing violent acts.
